I'm Bored

Everyone gets bored from time to time in DAoC. Sometimes we log on because we're bored and we carry that to the game. We get tired of the level grind, artifact runs, master levels and even RvR sometimes. This section is designed to offer suggestion for just such situations and hopefully give you some fun ideas. Many of these you will have done before. Some you may not have done before. Depending on your mood, some might sound better now than at other times. Refer back here from time to time and see how the suggestions strike you, or if there is anything new.

These work in any realm, though you'll find the names Albion specific. If you're playing in Midgard or Hibernia, you may have to substitute certain zone or dungeon names, but you'll get the idea.

Explore The Frontier

There are 12 zones of frontier, and most of us /stick the whole time. Venture out on your own and run around. Try to learn the lay of the land for a given zone without using the /realmwar map. Learn where certain mobs are, bridge names, keep and tower names etc. by sight. Learn where those darn impassible walls are, and where to get up on the mesas to cross over on bridges. It will really come in handy if you ever drive, or if you get separated… plus, it's something to do.

You'll probably get rolled a few times, but you might take out a single or two as well depending on your class. Be sure to come back in a few days or week and see how much you remember. Can you navigate the land without the map? Do you know the best routes to take?

Dartmoor Run

Dartmoor is a secluded place to go and sort of like hunting. It's full of named mobs that can easily be soloed by some classes, and certainly duo'd by most. Go solo, take a friend or bring a whole group. It's up to you. You'll find several named mobs which drop a variety of glowing weapons to complete anyone's collection, or adorn an alt.

Keep a sharp eye out and see how many named mobs you can find. Agidad, Borimo, Brac, Braen, Brannoc, Clud, Clywd, Galand, Kaq, Keh, Kez, Kor, Kul, Legil, Nodin, Penn, Pladimon, Tegbuk, Tolukin and Trahern all have a pretty good chance of dropping decent loot including glowies. The traditional older and lower quality glowing weapons still drop from other giants so don't completely neglect them, but your chances are greatest with the named.

Go to the Camelot and Gift a Newbie

This is one of my favorite things to do when I'm bored. Find some genuine newbie. Do a "/who Camelot" (or your capital city) and note anyone between 6 and 19. Chances are they don't have a 50 anywhere and might be struggling to make ends meet. Ask how they are doing for weapons and armor. Do they have anything blue or green con? Fix them up. If you craft, make them something - weapons, armor. If not, buy them some nice stuff just because. Don't just give them gold unless its to dye any armor you give them. Accept nothing in return from them. It's a gift. If they insist on giving you something, tell them to do the same for someone else when they are able and be on your way. You'll feel good about it and will totally make someone's day.

Clean Your Vault!

Remember when one vault wasn't enough? Remember how it was always a mess? Now you likely have one or more house vaults that look as bad as, if not worse than, your regular vault.

Clean it! Clean them all! You know you need to do it. Now that you've got some time on your hands, put it to use. Get rid of that old junk you've been holding onto since you were level 15 and those odd TOA drops you thought you'd need but now have more than enough. Sell, discard, move, organize - do something!

Collect Something

Foul Helm Just for kicks, start or complete a collection. Haven't you ever thought about how cool it would be to have every glowing weapons you could possibly get your hands on just for kicks? Or collect unique armor types such as found in Mysteries of Camelot. There are lots of oddities there. Alternatively, you could set out to collect various types of TOA armor and deck your lower level alts out in them, or keep a spare set to wear to guild meetings or events where your best suit isn't required (save that good stuff for rvr!).

You can build your collection by doing quests (for certain toa armor), farming, and/or checking consignment merchants. See what's out there and set out to complete your set or collection.

Work up your Tradeskill

Few things sound more boring than crafting, but it is something worth considering if you've got nothing to do. Set a personal goal. Maybe you want to be LGM in a certain trade. Maybe you want your tradeskill just high enough to make certain items or to craft diminutive siege. Set your primary goal, then set some smaller goals to work your way there. You'll feel good about accomplishing your goals, and the trade will come in handy. For example: Alchemy is nice to make various stat pots for yourself for emergencies. No more running out of power, or getting stuck with a ram on you after losing buffs. Sometimes those healing pots come in handy too.

Get Rich

Your goal doesn't always have to be a certain ML, XP level or Realm Rank or even crafting goal. One goal that not many people think about is a monetary one. Consider setting a goal of getting a certain amount of platinum and work toward it. You can have the cash on reserve, or use it to buy MP armor, respec. stones, artifacts - whatever your heart desires. Farm seals in DF, go on raids and sell any drops you might win - use your crafting skill to trinket if you are able. And don't forget scrolls. Many are worth a lot. Certain ML raids (esp. ML7 and ML9) or ToA farming can yield some costly scrolls and/or items which sell well. Make a game out of it - get rich, and never have to worry about cash again.

As you work toward your monetary goal, but sure to do it in an honorable way. Cheat no one, and deceive no one. A good reputation is worth more than any cash you could save up. Never let greed get the best of you. Work toward your goal fairly and honestly.

Redecorate

Housing has been out for a while and most of us had fun decorating our first home. Remember how everyone wanted to show off how their home decorating skills? Have a go at it again. Take a few screenshots of what you currently have set up incase you bomb on your redecorating effort. Take everything out and start from scratch. You can do just in inside, outside, or both. Maybe a new trophy mob can be the reason to change it all. Have a go at it - you might like it better.

Get a new Trophy

With recent patches new trophy mobs have been introduced, and chances are there are many of the original ones you never got either. Check out the Trophy Mobs link and have a look. There are lots of ToA trophies that few people have. Some of these are even soloable. Many hard to get ones are sometimes found on consignment merchants so don't forget to check there. Collect a few and redesign an entire room with ToA decor.

Get that darn Artifact

There is a love-hate relationship with most artifacts. You'd love to have them, but you hate to get them. Some are more difficult than others, such as Guard of Valor and Healer's Embrace. Yet they are part of the game and some of them are just excellent gear.

They are all attainable. Quit wishing you had a certain artifact and just do what it takes to get it, no matter what the cost, not matter how long it takes. Save up several platinum to buy it if necessary. Sell junk to raise funds. Camp the sight with an alt and check frequently. Join artifact raids, schedule artifact raids. If you lose on a roll, see if the winner is willing to sell. check the consignment merchants - just get it and be done with it.

Level that darn Artifact

So you got the uber artifact you've been dreaming of since toa came out. Time to level it up. The best way is to level them all at the same time, so make sure you have all you want and need before hitting POC. Consider other options too though. Artifacts XP in other locations besides POC, and it is nice to vary the scenery from time to time. Find a nice spot in the frontier (ours or the enemies), or check the artifact itself and see where else it might level. Maybe you could be farming for scrolls for another artifact, or just extra coin while leveling up your prized Artifact. Maybe you could make an XP group of it for some lower level folks in your guild.

Set an RP goal and get it

Many people forget that RvR is a leveling system, and there are plenty of RA's to work for. Set a realm point goal, or realm rank goal, and work toward it. I suggest you make it something attainable. If you set your goal at RR10, you might get a little discouraged if, in a year from now, you're still not there. Then again, some people work better that way so base it on what you think would work for you. Set a goal, achieve it, feel good about it, and set another.

Battlegrounds

Battlegrounds are a nice break from regular RvR. For one, it gives you a chance to play a different character. Spent a night or two in battlegrounds and consider it a learning experience. It can often be a lot of fun and it’s a nice break from the routine. You might make some new friends, or find old ones out there with an alt as well.

Go on a quest

That's right, a quest. Remember those? No... not those walk-throughs you read about on warcry and step through by clicking rapidly in the game, I mean those stories you become a part of as you play the game. A quest. A game quest, yes, but actually do it the way it was intended, as a quest, not a click-fest. Find yourself a good quest on Warcry, Allakhazam, or Visions of Sage if you like, but don't read through the steps. Experience it. Find the start npc, and end loot (to make sure it's at least half-way decent) and actually read the text of the quest. Don't fall back on the walk-through, but find the items and locations are you supposed to on your own. Explore and discover. You might be surprised at what fun you have.

You will likely get stuck at some point and be tempted to immediately consult the guide, assuming it is bugged or in error, but don't give in easily. Explore a little. Chances are you just didn't look hard enough, or read something thoroughly enough. Give it a shot.

Darkness Falls Prince raid

Deep within the bowls of Darkness Falls three princes fowl reside. Prince Ba'alorien, Asmoien, and Abdin are a good challenge for a solid group. Timing is everything, for your realm must first own the dungeon, and you need to round up a full group and perhaps more in order to slay all three. With ToA gear and master level abilities, you'll find it easier than in days past, but still fun and a good adventure. The loot used to be some of the best in the game. Although many consdider 94% quality items as salvagable now-a-days, these particular items are not common and are valuable to any collector.

The best map for this adventure is found at Kirstena's Dark Age of Camelot Atlas. Assemble a group and pay the old demons a visit one more time.

Barfog run

Llyn Barfog is one of the least visited zones in Albion, with some pretty cool drops. It doesn't take but a few strong characters to take down most of the named mobs there. King of the Barfog Hills can be killed with as little as two people if you do it right. Go with 4 or more and you're sure to do well. The mobs there don't always drop, but often they do and it's always fun to challenge yourself to see just which and how many of the named you can take on with just a few people. King of the Barfog Hills, Fester, Teazanodwc, Mouth, Wrath of Mordred, and Legendary Afanc all have a good chance of dropping.

If you have time on your hands, or want to PL some people, dont' forget to farm Diamond Back Toads, Needletooth Devourers, Frenzied Feeders, Bearded Gorgers, Ravenclan Giants, and even Ellylls. They all drop glowing weapons, some less common than others.

Make your own DAOC Website

You're laughing, right? You're thinking this one is simply impossible because you don't know how to make websites, right? Well, neither did I until I started, and my first one was an older version of this Cald's Place. Or maybe you know HTML and have just never thought about putting it to use with DAOC. I find it is a nice diversion from the routine game play, and yet still associated as well.

So - what to do? There are easy ways to make your own websites through Angelfire, Geocities, and the like. They offer free hosting, and online tools and templates for beginners. Maybe just start with a site hosting your favorite screenshots and a story about them. Put your own links up that you like and make it usuable for you, and others. Just have fun with it.

If you're really adventurous you can try to tackle HTML and program your webpages yourself. That's what I did. I learned most everything from Davesite.com. Follow his HTML tutorial for beginners and you could be cranking out your own webpages in no time.

Play (not PL) an alt

Play one of your alternate characters. I don't mean power-level it, I mean play it. Many of us have been playing high level toons for so long, and power levling our lower ones to make them high level, that we have forgotten how to just play a toon for what it is. Did you know it can actually be fun? Try going at it under your own power, or group with a friend but don't join another Power-leveling group. Just play your toon.

Do you want to get really adventerous? Don't use anything but the drops you get on your alt. This might be hard if it is already twinked out and pockets stuff with plat. Maybe your next toon you roll you might want to try and just use the gold and drops you get with no hand outs. Follow quest guides for drops etc. You might be amazed at how fun it can be. Your toon won't be 50 in a week, but you may have more fun in the long run.

Krondon Raid

Krondon has got to be one of the least visited dungeons in Albion, second only to Tepok’s Mine. It is also known as the Ogre Citadel, and situated in Aldland. Krondon has two entrances. The original entrance is located at 26k, 5k Aldland, and the newer tunnel entrance can be found at 9k, 6k. There is no agro when using the tunnel entrance so it is often preferred. Most people only visit Krondon for the Ogre’s Might quest, but there are plenty of named mobs in there to be farmed for good MP drops (many of which have visual effects). Check my
Map of Krondon for mob locations. To ensure a sucessful raid, you’ll need at least 2 full groups, and for some of the mobs 3fg (more for Scureol Hyrde).

If you haven’t yet experienced this dungeon, have a peak at it. You can wander through parts of it on your own if you go through the tunnel entrance. Schedule a raid with your guild or alliance and see if you can take down the named mobs. The loot is good and bound to be rare since few people venture there.

Farm Ghost Families

Dales of Devwy has two sets of ghostly families which drop a variety of loot, including several glowing weapons, such as the
Shimmering Scale Crusher and the Brilliant Shiv of Shadows. The easier of the two families are located in Dales of Devwy at 55, 14. These can be done with a small group of 2-4 people, or low 40’s group. The second set of ghostly families is found at 3, 50, and requires a few more people of higher levels.

Not many people farm these anymore, and it makes a nice break from the xp ruts we all get in. I recommend you bind at Fort Gwyntell, and to MOVE your bind after you’re done. There is nothing worse than finding yourself on the far end of the world when you release because you forgot to move your bind back to Gothwaite harbor or CS.

Darkspire Raid

Darkspire is a great instance experience. It requires a full group and a little research to effectively lead. There is a great walkthrough you can find at
loreguild.com. There is another on Camelot Vault. Some excellent loot with high utility can be found in this instance, as well as unique, quality glowy weapons - some even useable in a final template. It’s a lot of fun, but does take good communication and a lot of team work. The reward of completing it, and the loot, are well worth the time.

Shrouded Isles named Mob Raid

Most Albs limit there time in SI to Avalon City or Caer Sidi, yet there are plenty of outdoor named mobs to slay. Form a solid group and take them on. I recommend doing it in two stages since there are a lot of mobs and travel involved.

Part I – Avalon Isle and Dales of Devwy: In Avalon Isle Lord Caddug resides. Don’t let the blue and green con mobs outside Caer Caddug fool you. Lord Caddug is Level 68, throws people from the second floor, and heals mid-battle. He takes a lot of firepower to take down. Dales of Devwy has Risn’nr Cruss in the village of the damned. His AOE Mezz can be troublesome but breaks fairly quickly. Qaun’ris Duros spawns in a couple locations and is a worthy opponent. In the Southern part of the zone the Tower Keeper and Tower Guardian are both found, as well as Pazia and Tyian – lower level, but worth the kill to climb the tower and view the penthouse.

Part II – Caldey, Gwyddneau, and Inishail Island: In Caldey, Vortanos seems relatively simple, until he summons a great many undead to his assistance. Pull him far and you will likely succeed. The Amphitere is near and an easy kill. Near the coast, south of Sidi, is Durval. He has a lot of tricks up his sleeve but isn’t much of a challenge for even a small group. Gwyddneau has the Self Proclaimed King Dulgar, who is likely more than a single group can handle. Across the water on Inishail Sarcodina, Chieftain Toca and the Spirit of Lord Emthoro are found. Plan on Emthoro taking a long time to kill for one group.

There are a few more scattered about, but these make a good raid. Research it further and see what you come up with!
